Karachi Weather Update: PDM Predicts Sporadic Showers and Thunderstorms

Monsoon currents that have invaded Sindh could cause further rain to fall in Karachi and other areas of the province through August 9.

Heavy Rainfall in Karachi claims four lives

Today in Karachi, the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) predicts sporadic showers and thunderstorms. The port city’s highest temperature is forecast to be between 30 and 32 degrees Celsius with a probability of 80 to 90 percent humidity. Monsoon currents that have invaded Sindh could cause further rain to fall in Karachi and other areas of the province through August 9.

The PMD reported that monsoon currents are entering the country’s central and southern regions in its daily meteorological report. The western and upper regions of the nation are also being affected by a westerly wave.

The Met Office said that hot and humid weather is expected in most parts of the country. However, rain-wind/thundershower is expected in Kashmir, upper Punjab, upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Gilgit Baltistan. Rain-wind/thundershower is expected at few places in lower Sindh and north Balochistan.

Urban Flooding

The PMD warned that heavy rains may generate urban flooding in Karachi, Thatta, Badin, Hyderabad, Dadu, Jamshoro, Sukkur, Larkana, Shaheed Benazirabad and Mirpurkhas from August 11 to 13.

On Saturday, the maximum temperature was 32.5 degrees Centigrade with 73% humidity.

In the majority of the country, the Met Office predicted hot and muggy weather. However, higher Punjab, upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Gilgit Baltistan are predicted to see rain, wind, and thundershowers. In a few locations in lower Sindh and north Balochistan, rain, wind, and thundershowers are predicted.

City Floods

From August 11 to 13, the PMD issued a warning that heavy rains could cause urban flooding in the cities of Karachi, Thatta, Badin, Hyderabad, Dadu, Jamshoro, Sukkur, Larkana, Shaheed Benazirabad, and Mirpurkhas.

The highest temperature recorded on Saturday was 32.5 degrees Celsius with 73% humidity.

As the Met Office noted seven millimeters of rain in Gulshan-e-Hadeed and 1.5 millimeters of rain in Keamari, several areas of the city experienced light rain or drizzle.

Karachi is likely to receive intermittent rains coupled with thunderstorms today. The maximum temperature in the port city is likely to range between 30-32 degrees Centigrade.
