Pakistan's First Lunar Mission ICUBE-Qamar Blasts Off to the Moon

Pakistan’s historic space exploration journey begins with the successful launch of its first lunar mission, ICUBE-Qamar. Developed by a collaborative effort between the Institute of Space Technology (IST), China’s Shanghai University SJTU, and Pakistan’s space agency SUPARCO, ICUBE-Qamar lifts off aboard China’s Chang’E6 spacecraft.

The launch, broadcast live on the IST website, marks a significant milestone for Pakistan’s space program, igniting a passion for space exploration within the nation.

This orbiter, ICUBE-Qamar, carries two optical cameras designed to capture images of the lunar surface. It has undergone rigorous testing and now joins the Chang’E6 mission, the latest chapter in China’s lunar exploration story.

China’s Chang’E6 mission aims to land on the far side of the Moon, collect samples, and return them to Earth for further analysis. Notably, Chang’E6 also carries Pakistan’s CubeSat, iCube-Q, developed by IST. CubeSats, known for their compact size and standardized design, offer valuable tools for scientific research, technological advancements, and space exploration education.

These tiny satellites, often weighing just a few kilograms, tackle diverse missions including Earth observation, remote sensing, atmospheric studies, communication, astronomy, and technology demonstration. Pakistan’s participation in this lunar mission signifies its increasing prominence in the global space sector and its unwavering commitment to pushing the boundaries of scientific exploration beyond Earth.
