AKU Students Shine at International Research Conference

The International Student Research Conference, organized by AKU’s Medical College, was a resounding success. Over 1000 students from 30 universities across the globe came together to share their research and network with peers. The conference, themed “Assembling Today’s Brightest for Tomorrow’s Breakthroughs,” featured keynote speeches, teaching sessions, journal clubs, and poster presentations.

Keynote speaker Dr. Hasan Badre Alam emphasized the importance of finding a purpose in research. He encouraged students to identify a problem they care deeply about and work towards solving it. The conference also provided opportunities for students to connect with professors and explore potential collaborations.

Dr. Sohail Khan, an AKU alumnus, shared his inspiring journey of returning to Pakistan to establish a hospital and research institute in Quetta. He highlighted the significance of leadership in driving positive change. The teaching sessions offered valuable insights into conducting research at various levels of expertise, while the journal clubs provided a platform for students to discuss research papers with faculty.

The conference addressed critical issues such as women’s health and the HPV vaccine. Dr. Zahra Hoodbhoy emphasized the need for separate healthcare for women, beyond pregnancy. Dr. Fyezah Jehan discussed the impact of research on policy and practice, highlighting the government’s decision to implement the HPV vaccine in school-going girls.

The International Student Research Conference showcased the bright future of medical research and the potential of young students to make a significant impact.
