The Aga Khan University (AKU) marked a milestone by hosting its inaugural student-led Model World Health Organization (M-WHO) assembly. This two-day event, backed by the WHO, allowed students to delve into pressing global health issues. Organized by AKU’s Graduate Education Student Society (AGESS), the summit fostered critical dialogue on Universal Health Coverage, Pandemic Resilience, Climate and Health, and Gender Health Equity.
Students worked in committees, crafting resolutions and strategies to address these challenges. They engaged in lobbying, negotiation, and block formation, mirroring real-world diplomatic processes. The culmination involved debating and voting on resolutions, emphasizing policy impacts on global health.
Dr. Luo Dapeng, WHO’s Country Representative for Pakistan, highlighted the importance of collaborative solutions, noting how young minds can drive innovation. Dr. Adil Haider, Dean of AKU’s Medical College, emphasized the event’s role in developing essential soft skills like negotiation and diplomacy. Professor Shahid Shamim, Associate Dean for Graduate Studies, praised the event as an innovative learning experience, and mentioned future plans to expand participation. Best delegate and position paper awards recognized student excellence. This event gave students a practical insight into global health governance.
