Senator Samina Mumtaz Zehri, Chairperson of the Senate Functional Committee on Human Rights, visited a local hospital in Harnai to inquire about the condition of miners injured in the recent coal mine gas explosion. The tragic incident claimed several lives and left many others critically injured, prompting widespread concern over safety conditions in Pakistan’s mining sector.
During her hospital visit, Senator Samina Zehri met with injured workers undergoing treatment and expressed heartfelt sympathies to them and their families. She acknowledged the hardships faced by the victims and reinforced her solidarity with the mining community during this difficult time.
Briefed by hospital staff about the condition of the injured, she called for a transparent and thorough investigation into the explosion to uncover the causes and ensure that accountability is upheld. Emphasizing the vital role labourers play in Pakistan’s economy, she stated that their safety and dignity must be treated as a national priority.
Senator Zehri also highlighted the repeated risks that miners face across the country and urged the relevant authorities to strictly enforce safety protocols and improve monitoring in the mining sector. She stressed the importance of preventive action, not just reactive responses, to protect lives and avoid further tragedies.
Ending her visit with a prayer for the departed souls, Senator Zehri underscored that human rights include safe working environments — and called for urgent reforms to safeguard the lives of Pakistan’s workforce.
