In a groundbreaking move for inclusive technology, ConnectHear and Ufone 4G (a PTCL Group company) have launched the world’s first AI-based Early Warning System for the Deaf and hard-of-hearing community in Pakistan.
The new system, called SUNO, is designed to deliver life-saving emergency alerts in sign language during natural disasters such as floods and earthquakes. Supported and funded by the GSMA Mobile for Humanitarian Innovation Fund, the initiative ensures that Deaf individuals receive critical information instantly and free of cost.
Using AI-powered sign language generation by ConnectHear and nationwide distribution through Ufone’s WhatsApp bot, SUNO delivers alerts directly to at-risk users across Pakistan. The system bridges a long-standing communication gap for the Deaf community, ensuring accessibility when it matters most.
Speaking about the collaboration, Hatem Bamatraf, President and Group CEO, PTCL & Ufone 4G, said, “Our partnership with ConnectHear reflects our belief that true digital inclusion leaves no one behind. Through the ‘Dil Se’ platform, we’re using technology with purpose to create impact that truly matters.”
Azima Dhanjee, Co-founder of ConnectHear, shared a deeply personal perspective: “In an emergency, communication isn’t just important — it’s a matter of life and death. Deaf individuals, including my parents, have long been cut off from urgent alerts. With SUNO, we’re finally changing that. Accessibility is not a privilege — it’s a fundamental human necessity.”
Kimberly Brown, Head of Mobile for Humanitarian Innovation at GSMA, highlighted the project’s global significance: “Inclusive innovation ensures mobile technology delivers meaningful impact where it’s needed most. By harnessing mobile voice services and low-bandwidth tools, this initiative shows how mobile can break barriers in disaster preparedness.”
The launch event in Islamabad showcased the live demonstration of SUNO’s AI alerts, marking a milestone in Pakistan’s humanitarian technology landscape. With ConnectHear and Ufone 4G leading the charge, this initiative not only redefines accessibility but also sets a global benchmark for using AI and telecom infrastructure for social good.
