The United Nations (UN) in its recently published report ‘World Population Prospects 2022’ has indicated that in 2050, the population of Pakistan may go up to 366 million, which is currently 220 million.
The report highlights that by the end of the year 2022, the population of the world may increase up to 8 billion, which is at present 7.7 billion.
Despite a 1% decline seen in the overall population of the world, however, by 2080, the global population may cross the figure of 10 billion people. Previous studies indicate that the stats were predicted to happen after the year 2100.
Pakistan in the UN report is one of the major reasons the population would go to new heights. The country in the 90swas ranked at 8th spot at 114 million people, among the most populous countries of the world. It should also be noteworthy that married couples face changes in lifestyles as well as the prevailing fertility issues, but even then that did not stop Pakistan to go to the 5th spot.
Earlier in May 2022, an 8th Midsummer Endocrine Updates Conference of the Pakistan Endocrine Society (PES) was held, titled ‘Endocrinology for the Future’. At that conference, experts revealed that low birth rates were due to lifestyle changes and infertility among Pakistani couples.
President Arif Alvi shared a special message on the occasion of World Population Day, “Council of Common Interests (CCI) has approved a set of eight recommendations and the National Action Plan (NAP) in consultation with the provincial and regional governments to address the matters related to population in the country inclusively”.
Arif Alvi said that he had high hopes for Pakistan to fulfilling the international commitments and take significant actions accordingly. He further said that he would take implementing partners and stakeholders on board to implement recommendations by CCI and NAP.
According to a World Bank report in 2014, the challenge for Pakistani men is a mammoth one regarding raising their families, and for this purpose, they too are forced to implement family planning in their lives.
The rise of the population up to 56% suggests that more revenue needs to be generated by the Pakistanis to ensure governmental, education, and healthcare costs are met. It should also be noted that Pakistan is one of the top 10 countries for asylum seekers and refugees.
