The automaker had considered retiring the G-Wagen but now believes that an electric version of the luxury off-roader might compete in an increasingly saturated market.

According to the Auto blog, Mercedes-electric Benz’s G-Wagen will be available in mid-2024, according to company chairman Ola Källenius during a weekly roundtable with media.

Källenius also said he drove a prototype version of the electric SUV at the company’s testing site in Graz, Austria. convinced him that electric vehicles are the future of off-road adventure. The electric G-Wagen is “just 24 months away,” Källenius told The Verge’s Nilay Patel in June.

It’s early, so details are scarce. Mercedes hasn’t provided range, battery size, or power projections. The idea has all-wheel drive, so the real version will, too.2021’s electrified G-Wagen was more design exercise than a display car. It was a first look at how Mercedes-Benz may modify the new G-Class announced at the 2018 Detroit Auto Show.

The idea EQG has the same two-tone paint treatment as the EQS. It had an illuminated grille like some previous concepts and real cars. The production EQG will arrive in mid-2024, joining the GMC Hummer EV truck and SUV, Rivian R1T and R1S, Chevy Silverado EV, and Ford F-150 Lightning.

The G-Wagen has always been a status symbol car and an off-roader, so anticipate the production EQG to include the same amenities as Mercedes-newest, Benz’s most costly models, such as the EQS sedan. The electric G-Wagen might be impressive if Mercedes-Benz can provide the EQG with the same range and performance as its EQS and EQE sedans.

Mercedes-Benz will invest €40 billion ($47 billion) to go all-electric by 2030.
