Trust for Vaccines and Immunization Launches a Unique Health Drive

Typhoid fever is common in school going children in Karachi. The rates of typhoid fever are higher for children between the ages of 5 to 15 years compared to other populations. On an average a child with typhoid fever misses 15 to 30 schools days and this has a significant impact on their education, apart from costs involved to the family in treating typhoid fever.

TVI has taken the initiative of preventing typhoid fever in collaboration with Ministry of Health (MoH) and Ministry of Education (MoE) Government of Sindh, City District Government of Karachi (CDGK), City District Government of Karachi – Gulshan Town and Expanded Program on Immunization (EPI) – Sindh through promotion for use of typhoid fever preventive measures in school going children. Another collaborator in this effort is the International Vaccine Institute (IVI) – Seoul, South Korea.

Talking about this initiative, Professor Abdul Gaffar Billoo, Chairman of TVI said, “Children are the future of any country. It is our responsibility to ensure that they have a safe, healthy and prosperous future. With this aim in mind, we took the initiative of creating awareness among teachers, parents and school going children about infectious diseases and the most effective preventive measures against them. We decided to start off by creating awareness about typhoid fever as it one of the most common dangerous disease affecting school going children in Karachi.”

TVI envisions a Pakistan with healthier children and in the future plans to create awareness about other infectious and Vaccine Preventable Diseases (VPD) that are common among children of Pakistan.
