Undoubtedly considered as one of the most powerful concepts in the business world Human resources and operational management are definitely interrelated to one another on so many levels. As operations management is concerned with converting materials and labor into goods and services as efficiently as possible. The need of human resources for smooth operational management is clearly significant and essential. It can never be ignored and holds great importance for successful management of the particular operations may it be in a business, or an organization or anywhere.

All companies have been religiously following the human resources strategies and practices to improve and boost operations management. Within the strategic human resource management perspective, psychology-based practices, especially empowerment, extensive training, and teamwork, are seen as imperative to sustained competitive advantage. Other approaches, such as those of integrated manufacturing and lean production, place greater emphasis on operational initiatives such as total quality management, just-in-time, advanced manufacturing technology, and supply-chain partnering as determinants of organizational performance.

The relative merits of these practices were investigated through a study of the productivity of  308 companies over 22 years, during which they implemented some or all of these 7 practices. Being consistent with these theories one can find performance benefits from empowerment and extensive training, with the adoption of teamwork serving to enhance both. In contrast to this, none of the operational practices were directly related to productivity nor did they interact with other practices in ways fully consistent with the notions of an integrated manufacturing or lean production.

According to Simon Sinek, If you hire people just because they can do a job, they’ll work for money. But if you hire people who believe what you believe,  they’ll work for you with blood, sweat, and tears. Definitely Human resources are imperative for an organization or a business’s smooth operational management as all operations do require human power to convert all the input into productive and effective output. All big companies even in Pakistan such as Nestle, Mobilink, etc. None of them would have been possible without good human resources as they have a great impact on operations management. Even if you consider a business working with the human resources element it would not be possible to structure such a plan and would ultimately fail and fail badly.

Concluding all the things, the need for human resources for better and smooth operational management and vice versa wouldn’t be possible ever. Both are equally important in an organization and altogether strengthens a company’s position even though both include a great amount of work and dedication but as said by the successful ones Great things never came from comfort zones.
