Bangkok (CNN) According to officials, a fire that started early on Friday inside a nightclub in Thailand resulted in at least 14 fatalities and 35 injuries.

Around one in the morning, a fire broke out at the Mountain B nightclub, a one-story structure in the Sattahip district of the province of Chonburi, southeast of Bangkok and about 30 kilometers (18 miles) south of Pattaya City, a well-known tourist destination, according to Thai police. The incident occurred during a live music performance, and burn injuries ranged from “light to serious,” according to police colonel Wuttipong Somjai, who spoke to CNN.

He said that all of the deceased were Thai nationals. The youngest casualty thus yet identified was a 17-year-old, according to rescue officials.

Col. Somjai stated that inquiries into the fire’s origin were now ongoing.

People couldn’t escape:

When a woman raised in shouting that the roof was on fire, Nattanit  Pikulkaeu said she was near the front of the stage and celebrating her brother’s birthday at the nightclub.

She saw the speakers on stage were on fire a short while later.

She told CNN that as audience members tried to flee, the entrance to the club became congested. “Within no time, the fire had spread to the ceiling,” she added.

People were attempting to break the glass walls, but she said that they were too thick.

Her sibling is critically ill after sustaining serious burns; his companion perished inside the structure.

Local musician Raphon Namtham told CNN that the nightclub opened two months ago and quickly gained a following among the community due to its nightly live band performances that went from 12 a.m. to 1 a.m. He added, “Clients come to drink and dance.

Although he wasn’t there when the fire started, he claimed that only patrons could enter and leave the club through the front door.

According to him, musicians would use the rear door, which would be locked during concerts, to enter and escape.
