Beijing: A massive earthquake slammed southwestern China on Monday, killing at least 46 people, according to official media, as intense vibrations damaged homes and knocked out power in some regions.
According to the US Geological Survey, the magnitude 6.6 quake struck roughly 43 kilometres southeast of Kangding in Sichuan province at a depth of 10 kilometres. CCTV, a state-run news station, said that 14 people died in Sichuan’s Shimian county and 7 people died in the neighbouring Luding county. More than 30 people were also hurt.
