A Renowned Educator Hunaid Lakhani Died at 49 in Karachi

Hunaid Lakhani, a social worker and the founder of Iqra University (IU), died on Thursday in Karachi. He was 49 years old.  Waqar Lakho, his personal secretary, told Dawn.com that Lakhani had gone to Thatta on Monday to help with flood relief.

Lakho said that when he got back to the city, he got a fever and his condition started to get worse. He was later diagnosed with dengue.  Lakhani had trouble breathing on Wednesday night and was taken to a hospital in Clifton. Lakho said, “He died early Thursday morning.”

Prayers for his funeral will be said at Masjid-e-Saheem in DHA’s Khayaban-e-Rahat after Asr prayers on Friday.  Lakho said that Lakhani’s son and daughter lived abroad, so the funeral prayers would be on Friday.

Everyone was shocked when they heard that Lakhani had died. People in the government, in politics, and in the rights movement all said that his death was a big loss for the country. President Arif Alvi was very sad and said prayers for those who had died. “These events should remind us that life is uncertain and short,” Alvi said in a tweet.

Shehryar Afridi of the PTI also expressed sadness and said that Lakhani “worked hard in many fields to improve the lives of the masses.” Afridi said, “Today, we lost a philanthropist, a scholar, and a friend who was more like a brother.”

Shehzad Roy, who used to be a musician but now works as a social worker, said, “I can’t believe you’re gone.”

Dr. Ramesh Kumar Vankwani, an MNA, said that Lakhani “won in every aspect of life but lost to dengue.” He told the family that he was sorry for their loss.
