Exhibitor Relations, a company that tracks the movie business, said on Sunday that the new Warner Bros. movie Black Adam won the North American box office with an estimated $67 million, beating out all other films.

Shazam and Black Adam is a superhero origin story based on the 2019 movie Shazam. Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson plays the title villain, a formerly enslaved person who Egyptian gods gave incredible powers.

David A. Gross of Franchise Entertainment Research said, “As a spinoff, this is a great start.” He also said it was a “positive and steady step forward for DC Comics,” which has been the source of many superhero movies.

Ticket to Paradise from Universal came in a distant second with $16.3 million from Friday to Sunday. The movie made $80 million because it came out before North America.

Gross said, “This is a great start for a romantic comedy in its home country.” George Clooney and Julia Roberts are a divorced, fighting couple who go to Hawaii to stop their daughter’s wedding. The following two movies were scary specials that came out before Halloween.

This past weekend, Smile from Paramount fell from second to third place with $8.4 million in ticket sales. Sosie Bacon plays a therapist who loses her grip on reality after a terrible event.

Then came Halloween Ends from Universal, which dropped from last weekend’s record-setting $41.3 million to just $8 million. Starring is Jamie Lee Curtis.

And Sony’s family-friendly Lyle Lyle Crocodile came in fifth place with $4.2 million. Hollywood did well over the weekend, making more than $100 million. The Woman King ($1.9 million) was the last movie in the top 10. It did well at the box office.
