Ride-hailing app Uber is officially leaving the Pakistani market. The company announced its decision to cease operations. Despite Uber’s departure, Pakistani users will still have access to ride-hailing services. Uber’s subsidiary, Careem, will continue to operate across the country, offering both riders and drivers a seamless transition.
This move highlights a potential shift in Uber’s global strategy. In 2019, Uber acquired Careem for $3.1 billion, with both companies initially intending to maintain separate brands. However, it appears Uber is consolidating operations in certain regions, phasing out its own app in favor of Careem.
Uber’s exit from Pakistan has been gradual. In October 2022, the company ceased operations in several Pakistani cities, including Karachi, Multan, Faisalabad, Peshawar, and Islamabad. Lahore was the only city where both Uber and Careem apps remained operational.
On April 30, 2024, Uber users in Lahore received an email informing them of the app’s closure in the city. Careem will take over, offering existing Uber users a discount on their first rides.
Uber will communicate a separate process for users to reclaim any remaining balance in their Uber Cash wallet.
