Uber Eats Acquires Foodpanda's Taiwan Business in $950 Million Deal

Uber Technologies has struck a deal to acquire Delivery Hero’s Foodpanda business in Taiwan for a cool $950 million. This move signals Foodpanda’s strategic shift to focus on other Asian markets, while Uber solidifies its presence in the competitive Taiwanese food delivery scene.

The acquisition, expected to close in the first half of 2025 subject to regulatory approval, will see Uber Eats take over Foodpanda’s Taiwan operations. Niklas Östberg, CEO of Delivery Hero, explained the decision to optimize resource allocation across their various markets. Pierre-Dimitri Gore-Coty, Uber’s senior VP of delivery, highlighted the immense growth potential within Taiwan’s online food delivery sector.

Foodpanda, acquired by Delivery Hero in 2016, boasts a strong presence across Southeast Asia. Currently, they operate in Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, the Philippines, and Hong Kong. In Taiwan specifically, both Foodpanda and Uber Eats have been the dominant players, with Foodpanda holding a slight edge at 52% market share (Measurable AI data). This acquisition is poised to significantly alter the Taiwanese food delivery landscape.
