Zong Launches 100 more Solar-Powered Sites in Q1

In a significant stride towards sustainability, Zong has successfully deployed over 100 solar-powered sites across Pakistan in the first quarter of 2025. This ambitious initiative not only highlights the company’s commitment to environmental responsibility but also aligns with Pakistan’s national goals of increasing the share of renewable energy in the overall energy mix and achieving the targets set forth in the National Climate Change Policy.

The deployment of these solar-powered sites represents a transformative shift in Pakistan’s energy landscape. As the country navigates the challenges of energy scarcity and rising electricity costs, Zong’s investment offers solutions that leverage the region’s abundant solar resources. By generating over 100,000 units of clean energy and realizing substantial cost savings of PKR 7.1 million, Zong is proving that sustainability and operational efficiency can go hand in hand.

This achievement reflects a strategic pivot towards the integration of green technologies across Zong’s operations. By transitioning away from conventional energy sources, the company is significantly reducing its carbon footprint. This move is especially crucial in Pakistan, where the tangible impacts of climate change call for urgent, sustainable action.

Zong’s clean energy efforts are already producing measurable environmental gains. In 2024 alone, the company’s initiatives reduced CO₂ emissions by 40,000 tons per month; a figure expected to grow with continued upgrades throughout 2025. Presently, Zong operates 805 solar-powered sites nationwide, with plans for further expansion. Additionally, the company has equipped 12,070 sites, 76% of its total network, with Lithium-Ion battery systems, enhancing energy storage capacity and ensuring seamless operations.

Beyond the environmental impact, Zong’s investment in solar infrastructure is also expected to spur economic benefits. From creating green jobs in solar power installation and maintenance to cultivating a culture of sustainability among employees and stakeholders, this initiative sets a strong example for other companies in the telecom sector and beyond. It underscores the potential for the private sector to play a pivotal role in national and global environmental goals.

Moreover, the deployment of solar-powered sites, bolstered by reliable backup systems, contributes to the stability and resilience of Zong’s network. This translates into better service continuity and improved connectivity.

Zong’s commitment to clean energy goes beyond corporate responsibility, it’s a pledge to drive environmental progress through digital innovation. By embedding sustainability into the core of its operations, the company is not just leading the charge in telecom innovation, but also paving the way for a greener, more resilient future for Pakistan.

As Zong continues to expand its solar footprint, it stands as a powerful testament to the impact of environmental stewardship fueled by technological innovation.
