Matthew Perry has apologized for parts of his upcoming book Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing that mention Keanu Reeves. In the excerpts from the book that Variety and The New York Post published, Perry said that he had a strange grudge against Keanu Reeves.
In one part, Perry, who is 53 years old, wrote about his friendship with the late actor River Phoenix “River was a beautiful man on the outside and on the inside. As it turned out, he was too beautiful for this world. It always seems like the guys with the most skill are the ones who lose. Why do creative people like River Phoenix and Heath Ledger die, but Keanu Reeves is still here?”
Perry brought up Reeves again when he talked about comedian Chris Farley’s death. “His illness got worse more quickly than mine did. (Plus, I had a healthy fear of the word “heroin,” which neither of us did.) “Perry is writing. “When I found out, I put a hole in the wall of Jennifer Aniston’s dressing room. Keanu Reeves is out and about.”
The former member of Friends now says he made a mistake. “I’m a big fan of Keanu, to be honest. I just chose a random name, my mistake. I apologize. I should have just called myself, “Perry told PEOPLE in a statement.
The Hollywood Reporter says Perry’s book doesn’t mention why Reeves’s name was brought up. Reeves and Phoenix were both in the 1991 movie My Own Private Idaho. It doesn’t look like Perry and Reeves have worked together in movies or TV shows. Since Phoenix’s death, Reeves has been open about how close they were as friends and how much the loss hurts him.
