Earthquake tremors were felt Monday in Area of Skardu

The earthquake reportedly originated 70 km southwest of Gilgit city in the Hindu Kush, with a depth of 40 km.

Earthquake tremors were felt Monday in Area of Skardu

Today, an earthquake with a magnitude of 4.3-4.6 hit the Roundu Valley in Skardu and the nearby areas in Gilgit-Baltistan (GB). The jolts caused heavy landslides in the areas that were hit, and about four people on the road were hurt.

From what we know, the first tremors were felt around 9:30 a.m. in the lower and upper parts of the areas listed above. The quake is said to have started in the Hindu Kush, 70 km southwest of Gilgit city, at a depth of 40 km.

Locals said that the earthquake caused several landslides that blocked the GB road, including the highways of Gunji village and other higher areas of the region.

The Gilgit-Skardu route is also closed because of the landslides, and rescue officials say that many passengers were hurt.
