Pakistan’s Lahore – We regret to inform you that on February 10, 2023, a heart attack caused the passing of renowned poet, lyricist, and dramatist Amjad Islam Amjad. Age-wise, he was 80.
Amjad Islam Amjad, who was born in 1944, was a prolific writer who was renowned for his original and perceptive commentary on society and human nature. He published more than 40 books over the course of a 50-year career and was largely considered as one of the most significant authors of his day.
Amjad has made incalculable contributions to Pakistani literature. His literary works were recognised with many honours, including as the Pride of Performance and Star of Excellence Awards. He was a well-known journalist and broadcaster who, from 1975 to 1979, served as director of the Pakistan Television Corporation.
Amjad was not only a talented writer but also a committed teacher who began his career as a lecturer at the government M.A.O. college in Lahore. Later, he worked as the project director for the Children Library Complex and the Director General of the Urdu Science Board.
Although he also authored columns, translations, criticisms, and essays, Amjad continued to concentrate on creating Urdu poetry. Among his well-known dramas are Waris, Dehleez, Samandar, Raat, Waqt, and Apnay Loug.
Amjad received the Necip Fazil International Culture and Art Award in December 2019 in Istanbul, Turkey, demonstrating his enduring influence on literature and culture.
A true visionary and creative has left the earth. Despite his passing, Amjad Islam Amjad’s contribution to Pakistani literature and culture can never be forgotten. His family and loved ones are in our thoughts and prayers during this trying time.
